Losing Weight is an Inside Job

The importance of being thin is plastered all over television, newspapers and magazines. The "skinny" image is what the media tells us is correct. This image is putting a lot of stress on women to be skinny. Society thinks that if you want to be beautiful, you also have to be skinny.

Because of this, many women go to great lengths to obtain the "skinny" image. Some even get caught in the dangerous bulimic and anorexic trap. Both bulimia and anorexia are very serious conditions that require medical treatment. According to Stedman's Medical Dictionary: Bulimia nervosa, more commonly known as bulimia, is an eating disorder. It is a psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by intentionally doing one or more of the following in order to compensate for the intake of the food and prevent weight gain:

- vomiting,
- inappropriate use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics or other medication,
- excessive exercising

Webster's Dictionary defines anorexia as,

A psychophysiological disorder usually occurring in young women that is characterized by an abnormal fear of becoming obese, a distorted self-image, a persistent unwillingness to eat, and severe weight loss. It is often accompanied by self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, malnutrition, amenorrhea, and other physiological changes.

A woman does not have to be bulimic or anorexic to obtain a slim figure. Bulimia and anorexia are two common eating disorders that destroy a person's life. The victims overeat and engage in vomiting in hopes of losing weight. The weight loss is obtained; however, the victim's health suffers. Many women die each year from bulimia or anorexia. These are two very dangerous ways to lose weight.

If you or anyone you know is engaging in bulimic or anorexic behaviors, you should consult your doctor immediately.

All of the movie actresses that you see from Hollywood and all of the high-class Paris models that you see in magazines have the perfect body. They are thin and beautiful. Their curves are perfect, and their smiles are out of this world. All women want to look and be like these actresses and models.

However, what women fail to see is that the pictures you see are not real pictures of the actual person. They are pictures that have been edited, changed and/or altered in some way to make these women look flawless. Yes, they are thin and beautiful in real-life; but there are a lot of tricks that the photographer can use to make these women appear to be perfect in the pictures.

Women are actually built to have curves and a higher percentage of body fat than men. It is ok to be a little overweight. There are hundreds of beautiful and successful women who are overweight. There are healthy and safe ways to lose weight. Three ways that a woman can lose weigh successfully are:

1.) Eat smaller portions of healthy foods. Reduce or eliminate junk food or foods that are high in oils, fats, and calories

2.) Exercise regularly. Visit your doctor before starting an exercise routine. It is exercise 20-30 minutes per day. Walking, jogging, doing sit-ups or aerobics are great exercises that help shed unwanted pounds

3.) Take a dietary supplement. One dietary supplement that is worth exploring is called Zyroxin(tm) and is available at http://www.bodestore.com and at Amazon. This product can help curve your hunger and help you lose weight. Another product that attacks weight loss on multiple fronts is Zalestra (tm) also available from http://www.bodestore.com.

You do not have to risk your life to be skinny and beautiful. You should never engage in bulimic or anorexic activities because this will only harm your body and these conditions can be fatal. Eating right, exercising regularly, and taking dietary supplements are three of the best ways to lose weight.

Healthy Weight Loss

The overweight and obesity epidemic is a worldwide problem. There are no official statistics for spending on diet products, but estimates vary from $40 to $100 billion in the US alone, much of that on scams and fad diets that promise the impossible.

Research shows that 95% of people who have lost weight find that they regain it back when they return to their normal eating habits.

According to the Center for Disease Control's Chronic Disease Center, in 1991 in the United States, only four states had an obesity prevalence of 15 percent to 19 percent. In 2003, 15 states had an obesity prevalence of 15 to 19 percent, 31 states had an obesity prevalence of 20 to 24 percent, and four states had a prevalence of 25 percent or more.

Major medical problems associated with obesity include gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and osteoarthritis.

If that isn't incentive enough to lose that excess weight statistics show that overweight people are usually given lower paying jobs, get lower salaries, receive little in raises, and are, as a whole, looked down upon by 40 percent of fellow employees and employers.

In 2002 The American Heart Association reported that more than 10 percent of US children ages 2 to 5 are overweight. That is up from 7 percent in 1994. The situation is probably even worse now, said Dr. Robert H. Eckel, president-elect of the heart association and professor of medicine at the University of Colorado.

The obesity problem among children has increased with school-age children as well. Four million children ages 6 to 11 and 5.3 million in age group 12 to 19 have increased by 75 percent from 1991.

Food habits adopted in childhood can be hard to change. As a result hypertension and high cholesterol leading to heart disease, strokes, and diabetes are going to become the nations top health problem with people of all ages within 10 to 30 years. These are ailments that usually afflict the middle age to elderly population. More than a million new cases of diabetes are already being diagnosed each year, says the American Diabetic Association.

Nearly 30 percent of American adults are overweight and another 30 percent are obese, according to University of Minnesota researchers. Obesity is usually described as a weight 20 percent greater than the persons desirable weight.

A study by the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle revealed that 60% of overweight women, and 70% of obese women, are likely to become pregnant while taking the pill. The researchers suggest that a higher metabolism is the reason, causing the medication to be effective for a shorter length of time. Or, that the drug interacts with the body's hormones in a way that the drug becomes trapped in the body fat instead of circulating in the bloodstream.

Studies with obese pregnant women show they are 50% more likely to die during pregnancy than those of normal weight. Complications such as miscarriage, gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, pre-term labor, and stillbirth are also more common. Preliminary evidence shows that babies are also adversely affected, and are more likely to be obese themselves in later life.

Fast foods: Studies show that people who frequent fast food outlets twice a week or more gained 36 pounds over the course of 15 years compared to 26 pounds for those that frequented them once a week or less.

A major factor for the obesity crisis is a sedentary lifestyle, not enough exercise, and the eating of high calorie fast foods in place of nutritious natural food products.

Fast food is designed to promote consumption of the maximum number of calories in the minimum amount of time. This upsets the body's normal metabolism. One solution is to eat smaller, more nutritious, meals more frequently throughout the day.

Physical activity reduces the effects of being overweight, but healthy eating habits have to be followed to prevent disease associated with poor nutrition according to an expert of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The new diet guidelines set by the Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture is basically a balanced diet and good old fashioned exercise. They stress more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and limit fats, sugar, alcohol, and salt.

Many supermarkets are open 24 hours a day making a choice of healthy food available at all times.

It is the desire of every young person to be smart, slim and attractive to his or her partner.

Unfortunately a majority of our young population is obese and in no way they can be termed as smart. Fast Weight Loss Takes Time

I recently received the following email:

Q. Five weeks ago, I began an exercise program and so far I have not lost any weight or gained in muscle tone, which is my goal. Regardless, I intend to keep it up, knowing that the results I want will occur if I give it time.

A. Yes, your results will occur if given enough time. Just stay the course. Be consistent and you'll get there. Luckily she was not upset about the lack of progress on her bathroom scale but most people aren't so willing to take that time.

Typical Dieter Losing Weight with Exercise: Ms. Too Tight Pants Decides to Drop a Dress Size

1. She starts out feeling excited, knowing she'll lose the weight she wants in the long run, if she can stay with it. (She's read the books. She knows this eating better and exercising more works).

2. She starts feeling better right away, although the scale shows no difference. (Results take awhile to build, and she knows this but it gets harder and harder to wait.)

3. Her clothes begin to fit looser. People start to notice, asking "Hey you're looking good. What are you doing?" (Things are starting to happen, but not very quickly).

4. She does "all the right things," such as eating well and getting good rest. She's tracking what she's eating and keeping a journal. It's all going great. (Consistency is the secret and a very good discipline).

5. Since she's been "so good" she decides to step on the scale. She's even got rewards in mind depending on how much she's lost. (Where's the evidence? She's getting impatient and wants to know this is working).

6. Alas! The scale shows a three pound weight gain and she throws her hands up in despair saying, "This doesn't work! I quit!" (The scale doesn't show us what is going on inside, it only weighs the total package. Maybe she just finished drinking 16 ounces of water, that's a pound right there).

7. She dismisses the real evidence (how she feel better and looks better; how she's been getting compliments; how her clothes fit better and some are getting too lose to wear) and she decides instead to rely of the wisdom of the bathroom scale. That piece of metal sitting on the bathroom floor, known for wildly inaccurate results, but nevertheless trusted as the ultimate authority.

She may have even started to gain some valuable active muscle tissue that supports and sustains the body, creates beautiful curves, and burns calories in the process, but without the result she wanted to see on her scale, she's quit.

Your body is made up of fat, skin, bone and muscle (plus water). When you exercise the goal is to increase the muscle and decrease the fat. A pound of muscle takes up much less space than a pound of fat, so regardless of what number you see on the bathroom scale, if you have been exercising, you are building a better, healthier frame.

Give your body a chance to display the results you seek. Rely on the evidence you see in how your clothes fit for instance. If you're losing inches, but the scale hasn't shown a change just wait. The scale will catch up soon enough. If you've gotten on the path to better health and weight loss, stay the course. Fast weight loss takes time.

Weight Loss Industry Introduces Organic Solutions

The weight loss industry is focusing on organic based diet solutions to help obese individuals lose weight.

(PRWEB) April 12, 2006 -- Losing weight and keeping the weight off has forced people to try questionable practices, according to a report by Melinda Murphy from the CBS Early Show. Trying surgery and dangerous pharmaceutical pills, dieters seem to push the limits of what is safe in their pursuit to lose weight, even with some trying Crystal Meth, according to her program.

Losing weight is a fundamental need for many obese individuals who face the practical and psychological effects of being overweight as explained by ObesityResearch.org. Studies have shown that obese individuals earn less than their more fit peers do.

This pressing need has motivated many individuals to gamble with their health in their quest for losing weight, with some trying "dangerous diet pills," said Anne Collins in her diet program.

One alternate approach introduced by TruGenix, is based on an organic solution. Instead of relying on pharmaceuticals, the company has developed a weight loss pill that is based on organic ingredients.

TruGenix introduced an organic weight loss supplement which, according to the company, contains a molecule which convinces the brain that it is full. By reducing hunger the dieter should eat less and force his body to use its stored energy, which is fat, which should lead towards a reduction in obesity.

In light of the negative side effects produced by other weight loss products, dieters need to always be cautions and consult with a medical professional. While a weight loss solution can improve a dieters life, there can be side effects for the dieter.

This attempt to use an organic pill to resolve the growing increase of obesity among Americans seems to have its roots in the organic food movement. Many people believe that an organic rich diet will enable them to live healthier lifestyles. By relying on organically grown food they are hoping to avoid dangerous pesticides and other harmful elements that can be introduced into the food chain.

TruGenix is approaching the diet market with an organic solution based on the theory that organic nutrients can lead to a healthier lifestyle.

Testimonials by content dieters seem to indicate that people are losing weight through the TruGenix Hoodia supplement.

Atkins Diet Not Safe for Everyone

The Atkins diet, which stresses low-carbohydrate, high-protein foods as a way to lose weight, might not be safe for everyone, new research suggests.

In a case report, Dr. Klaus-Dieter Lessnau, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, and his colleagues describe a life-threatening complication of the Atkins diet that occurred in 2004 to a 40-year-old obese woman.

The report appears in the March 18 issue of The Lancet.

The patient had followed the Atkins diet, including Atkins supplements. She went to the hospital with difficulty breathing and was diagnosed with a condition called ketoacidosis.

Ketoacidosis results when dangerously high levels of acids called ketones build up in the blood. Ketones are produced in the liver during starvation. A low-carbohydrate diet such as Atkins can lead to ketone production, Lessnau's team notes.

"She had to be admitted to the intensive care unit," Lessnau said. "The diet actually caused her acidosis."

Lessnau is surprised that this problem with the Atkins diet has not been reported before. "This is something that is not well-diagnosed or may be underreported," he said.

"The Atkins diet is not a safe diet in everybody," Lessnau said. "It can cause potentially life-threatening problems."

One expert suspects the diet itself may not have caused the woman's problem.

"This shows that people who are obese and lose a lot of weight quickly should be doing so under medical supervision," said Gary D. Foster, director of the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University. "Losing weight quickly brings its own set of problems."

Foster doesn't blame the diet itself. "It's a bit of a red herring to blame the diet," Foster said. "It's not clear from one case. We have known for a long time that losing weight quickly is a bad idea medically."

Another expert thinks that choosing a healthy diet is important when one wants to lose weight.

"One should be sensible when they want to lose weight," said Lyn Steffen, of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, and author of an accompanying commentary. "They should choose a diet that's healthy for them, as well as be physically active."

"My recommendation is to develop healthy eating habits for life," Steffen said. "The low-carbohydrate diet is not a diet for life."

Another expert said he's been against the Atkins diet from the time it was introduced in the 1970s.

"The Atkins diet is at odds with a strong foundation of knowledge about the fundamentals of healthful eating and sustainable weight loss," said Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, and author of The Flavor Point Diet.

One case report does not prove that it is a harmful diet, Katz said. "But the burden of proof has always been the other way around: diets at odds with conventional dietary wisdom must prove themselves healthful. In my opinion, the Atkins diet never did, and never will, meet this test."

Be Careful With Diet Pills

If you are a person who has struggled with their weight and has a BMI, or body mass index, above a 27, the idea of a pill helping you lose weight is very appealing. Taking diet pills seem to be the quick fix to helping obese persons lose weight. There are advantages to taking diet pills, but you have to weigh these benefits with the potential dangers of taking diet pills.

Some things you have to be careful about when taking diet pills are:

· Dangerous side effects and drug interactions – Some prescription diet drugs are very strong. Possible side effects occur in almost all prescription medications, and some can be very serious in nature. Each diet pill has its own unique set of side effect warnings, but some of the more commonly listed side effects are dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, upset stomach and constipation. You also have to look at the possibility of drug interactions between the diet pills and other medications you are taking. If you have any other health issues, the taking of diet pills may cause serious consequences when combined with other medications.

· The potential for becoming dependant of the diet pills – There are many diet pills that can become habit forming. Some prescription diet pills are stimulant-based and can be abused by users. This abuse can lead to dependence, just as with any other strong medication. Make sure to talk with your doctor if he decides to put you on a diet prescription that has been shown to be habit-forming. Find out what signs you should look for to indicate if you are having a problem.

· The potential of the diet pills disrupting regular metabolism – Since prescription diet drugs main purpose is to suppress appetite, the person taking diet pills may find themselves consuming many less calories than normal. This is good for losing weight on the surface, but ultimately will lead to your natural metabolism to slow down. When your natural metabolism slows, so does the rate in which you lose weight. That is why people who take diet drugs find they only lose a finite amount of weight when they take diet pills alone.

In order for diet pills to work for you, the first thing you should do is talk to your doctor. Find ways to change your lifestyle on top of the taking of the diet drugs to help you lose weight. Regular exercise, changing food choices, and regular check-ups with your doctor are great ways to increase your weight loss success.

Calcium - The Key To Quick Weight Loss

Are you dieting your way to bone loss?

Are you aware that the diet you follow may be depleting your bones of essential nutrients and increasing your chances of developing osteoporosis? Popular diets may promise quick weight loss, but calcium and other important nutrients are often missing from the menu, which can lead to bone loss.

And women who consistently limit what they eat to avoid gaining weight may undermine the health of their bones, according to a study by ARS researchers in California. (1)

The study looked at the eating behavior of women between the ages of 18 and 50 and found that those classified as "restrained eaters" had significantly lower bone mineral density and bone mineral content (key indicators of overall bone strength and health) than women who said they weren't concerned about what they ate.

"Exercise and eating a well-balanced diet with adequate calcium, are two of the best ways to keep your bones strong and healthy." advise the researchers.

Calcium is not only good for your bones but can help you maintain a healthy, low fat diet too. There has been increasing media coverage about numerous studies showing that a diet rich in calcium helps reduce body fat.

Why is calcium important in weight loss?

Calcium is a fat burner. High-calcium diets seem to favor burning rather than storing fat. Researchers say this is because calcium stored in fat cells plays an important role in fat storage and breakdown.

Calcium changes the efficiency of weight loss . In fact, study after study has shown that the people with the highest calcium intake overall weighed the least, and the people with the lowest calcium intake had the highest percentage of body fat. (2,3,4)

When overall calorie consumption is accounted for, calcium not only helps keep weight in check, but can be associated specifically with decreases in body fat. A low daily calcium intake is associated with greater tendency to gain weight, particularly in women. (5)

Researchers found that adolescent girls who consumed more calcium weighed less and had less body fat than girls who consumed the same amount of calories from other sources. (6)

Previous studies have shown that a higher calcium intake can block body fat production in adults and preschool children (7), but this was one of the first studies to show that it might have the same effect in body-conscious preteen and teenage girls.

But aren't dairy products fattening?

Some dieters consider dairy products to be fattening, but the evidence suggests the opposite is true.

Consumption of calcium-rich dairy foods can actually help to reduce and prevent obesity. Over 20 recent studies show that milk products actually contribute to weight loss.

A new study in obese adults, presented at the First Annual Nutrition Week Conference, showed that increasing calcium intake by the equivalent of two dairy servings per day could reduce the risk of obesity by as much as 70 percent. (8)

The study provided clinching evidence that calcium in low-fat dairy products can help adjust your body's fat-burning machinery and help keep your weight under control.

In another study, obese subjects placed on a high-calcium diet, with yogurt as the calcium source, showed markedly greater fat loss than those on a low-calcium diet. (9)

Numerous studies have shown that dairy calcium is more effective in reducing body fat than other forms of calcium. (10)

Why does diary calcium work so well?

Researchers believe that other nutrients found in milk products act in synergy with calcium to reduce fat more efficiently.

Glycomacropeptides (found in whey proteins derived from milk) in particular, are known to create feelings of satiety and fullness and decrease food intake. (11,12,13)

Foods that are a good source of calcium include cheese, milk, ice cream, baked beans and other dried legumes, dried figs, broccoli, most dark-green leafy vegetables, and soft fish bones like those in canned salmon.

Weight Loss: Weight Loss is All in Your Mind!

"The kind of thoughts that you plant in your mind, determine what you produce in life." Letting negative thoughts rule your mind can never make you achieve your goal. The magic key is to identify these negative thoughts which are keeping you away from your goal, keep throwing them out of your head as soon as they try to overpower you, brainstorm new positive thoughts (your inspirations and motivations), write them down and keep reading them until they don't become a part of you.

If negative thoughts like i will always be fat, i just don't have discipline to follow a healthy diet, or exercises are not meant for me as they are too hard and time consuming, keep you from losing weight, then you are not alone. But some of these same people eventually lose weight, reach their goal because they decide to fight, they decide to overcome their negative thoughts, THEY DECIDE THEY WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. The idea here is to be focused and overcome your negative thoughts because everyone of us deserves to lead a healthy life.

Tip: Enjoy the journey and you will definitely reach your destination.

First of all, imagine the life after you lose weight. It might make you feel more confident at work, sexier to your spouse, so energetic with your kids and above all, will give you eternal happiness. Right down your reasons to lose weight and keep it in your wallet, stick it at your desk or on your fridge. Its obvious that when you are trying to change your behavior, you might experience stress, anger, sadness or depression. Instead of finding poor substitutes like alcohol, video games, shopping, television etc, you can fight these experiences. Fight in the sense, that whenever these negative aspects occupy your mind, just catch hold of them and throw them out. It isn't as easy as it sounds BUT THEN NOT EVEN IMPOSSIBLE.

--> Learn how to fight Depression here at http://www.weightloss-health.com/Depression.htm

Most of us know what we have to do in order to lose weight but only few of us can actually lose weight. Why? Why are not you able to do it? Because bridging the gap between knowledge and action requires mental strength, requires you to get in control of your life completely and don't allow external factors like depression, anger, sadness to rule your life. Getting in control will not only help you lose weight but will help you in every sphere of life.

Fact: Weight loss is 90% mental and most programs don't address mental strength training in their training schedule and hence it accounts for their failure. If you are tired of mundane weight loss programs, tired of trying various supplements which don't fetch you results and you end up weighing the same, then its time for you to try something new.

Make losing weight an enjoyable endeavour. It requires commitment, goal setting and planning. Stick on to wall your specific goal, goal date, reason to lose weight, life once you lose weight and read it every morning. Be loyal to yourself and there's nothing which can stop you from losing weight. Wish you all the best in your endeavour!

Weight Loss. 5 Rare Tips for Maximizing Fat Loss

Drink Lemon Water with Meals - The acid from lemon slows stomach emptying and digestion. Consuming a full squeezed lemon in 20 ounces of purified water with a meal can lower blood sugar as much as 30%. By controlling blood sugar, the body can better rebound from the post meal insulin spike and begin burning fat sooner.

Psyllium Husk – Like acid from lemons, the fiber known as psyllium husk also slows stomach emptying and digestion. Consuming a tablespoon in water before a meal will prevent a spike in insulin and blood sugar. Post meal fat burning will begin sooner.

Drug Induced Obesity - Commonly used prescription drugs can interrupt many weight regulating factors. When used long term (6 months or more), these drugs elicit obesity among most users and will negate the benefits of all fat loss endeavors. This is true despite rigorous workout or diet routines that may be employed.

The most common of these drugs are those used for birth control, to treat high blood pressure (beta blockers such as Atenolol), depression (SSRI's such as Zyprexa), and diabetes (sulfonylureas such as Amaryl and thiazolidinediones such as Avandia).

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) – The nutrient ALCAR prevents fat storage. It is responsible for enhancing energy output by transporting fat to the mitochondria. The mitochondria is the powerhouse or engine of the cell and responsible for converting fatty acids to energy in the form of heat and ATP. Without this transportation, fatty acids are simply stored as fat.

Limit Alcohol Consumption– Alcohol is processed just like sugar. The body will burn alcohol before it burns fat. Most any amount is detrimental to your fat loss goals.

If consumed, alcohol should be limited to no more than 3 drinks per week (a drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits or 4 ounces of wine). To curtail the negative effects of alcohol consume it with a meal consisting of protein and fat. This will slow the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream and prevent its negative impact on weight gain due to insulin and blood glucose levels.
